The Ottawa Blizzard Floorball Club will be holding their registration night on October 6th, 2011. For those interested in organized floorball, please fill and return the OBFC Registration Form with payment. If you require more information, you may present yourself in person at Assumption School.

Are you interested in playing competitive floorball?
The Ottawa Blizzard Floorball Club will resume its competitive junior floorball program on March 21, 2011.

This 8 week program consists of:
  -1 or 2 hour sessions
  -Skill & tactic drills, strategies
  -Training in preparation for the 2011 Canada Cup in Toronto (May 20-22)
  -Coached by Ottawa Blizzard players

Sessions take place at Assumption school, 236 Lévis ave.
For the first session, all players are asked to show up at the gym for 6 pm sharp on their respective night.
Teams will be made for the following three divisions:

Atom (2000-2001) – Mondays
Peewee (1998-1999) – Tuesdays
Bantam (1996-1997) – Thursdays

In the meantime, you should register for the tryouts by confirming your child’s attendance, filling in the following registration form and returning it with payment during your child’s first floorball session.

The Canada Cup is North America’s biggest floorball event. Last year, 57 teams over 7 divisions attended the tournament. This year’s edition of the tournament takes place on May 20, 21 & 22 at York University. Official tournament website: www.thecanadacup.com

During the spring of 2010, Eric Chevaucherie, the Blizzard’s latest addition proposed the idea of a match up against his former club, les Nordiques de Tourcoing, France. The Ottawa Blizzard entertained the idea and in August, received the invitation to an international tournament in France. With great anticipation, the club accepted the invitation.

On Saturday morning, the Blizzard faced les Nordiques de Tourcoing, Eric’s former team. The Blizzard got off to a strong start with the first goal coming from Chevaucherie. By the end of the first period, the Blizzard was up by 5 goals. The Nordiques weathered the storm in the second. They kept the damage to a minimum. However in the third, the Blizzard turned up the heat and scored another 3 goals. The final score of that game with 8-3 Ottawa.

Ottawa faced les Hoplites d’Ambiani in their second round robin game. Ottawa was slow out of the gates, underestimating their opponent. The game was scoreless after the first period. To start the second, Mat Smith got the machine rolling with a quick wrap around. From there, it was all Ottawa. The final score was 9-0 Blizzard.

The Blizzard’s last game of the day was against HDM from Holland. It was a back and forth game. Both teams had equally good scoring opportunities but HDM took a 4-2 lead. Within the last 5 minutes of the game, the Blizzard was all over their opponent and mustered a goal. Despite tremendous efforts, Ottawa was unable to tie the game up and lost its first, and hopefully last, game of the tournament.

Sunday morning, the Blizzard matched up against the Belgian team Juventus FC. They were seen as the best team in the tournament. The Blizzard crew stuck to their relentless forechecking game but it was Juventus FC who got on the board first scoring from a hit-in. The Blizzard’s strong play down by the goal line got the Juventus players frustrated, to the point they took a penalty. Within the first 30 seconds of the powerplay, Paradis tied the game up with a point shot, the pass coming from Toupin. To complete the comeback and take the lead, Mat Smith and his offensive prowesses saw him thread a pass to Appelqvist who was alone in front of a wide open cage. The solid defensive play of Dave Stromberg and Magnus Schonning was monumental in this game. Paw Hickman’s size and speed lead to fierce battles for the ball and it gave no room to the opposing team, trying to make something happen. In the dying seconds of the game, the Blizzard got in some penalty trouble put was able to fend off a Belgian equalizer. The Blizzard now had their sights on the championship game.

In the finals, the Blizzard faced HDM once again in a rematch. the Blizzard got things going quickly with a Paw Hickman winning battles and sending the ball to Matt Smith who finished the play with a one-time shot that found the back of the net. However, HDM was able to bounce back and respond shortly after. Toupin added another with a far shot that found the twine through numerous bodies screening the goalie. HDM knotted the game at two goals apiece but Matt Smith took matters in his own hands finishing another play, similar to his first goal, but with the pass coming from Anders Appelqvist. JR Goulet stepped up his game for the finals as he faced quality shots and made key saves. The final nail in the coffin came with a few minutes left in the game as Toupin sniped a hit-in as HDM were changing up.

Congratulations to Mat Smith who took home the award for top point getter and best passer.

Overall, the Blizzard was treated like royalty by Eric Chevaucherie’s family. Three course meals and French wine were part of the hospitable reception. The guys are definitely looking forward to next year in hopes of defending their title.
