Spartans OFL Champs

Manor Park’s Ottawa Floorball League (Atom-Peewee) came to an end last night as 4 teams battled for Ottawa Floorball Supremacy. After exciting round robin games, the Vikings saw themselves face the Titans. The Titans offered some resistance but the Vikings came on top with spectacular performances from their goalie and defencemen. Their widespread offence was too much to handle as they exploded to a 7-2 3rd place finish. The Championship game was played between the Knights and Spartans. Right from the start, we knew this was going to be a long game. They exchanged a goals in the first period. In the second period, the Knights came out flying and scored 3 goals. However, the Spartans kept their heads up and started their reply with a goal. Both teams had solid defense and gave no openings to their opponents. In the third period, the Spartans and Knights exchanged a pair of goals and the Spartans potted two more for a 6-6 tie and bring this game to overtime. By then, both goalies had 25 plus saves under their belts, involving great athleticism, acrobatics and plenty of mask saves. During overtime, both teams had great scoring chances but the goalies’ stellar performances led this game to a shootout. Through the first 5 shooters, the Spartans put 2 on the board and the knights had 1. The Knights final shooter had the chance to keep things alive but wrung it off the post. Therefore, the Spartans claim the Manor Park Cup for the second year. Quite frankly, both teams deserved to win in this spirited tilt but unfortunately there could only be one winner, the Spartans.

Junior Blizzard Coaches

Here is the coaching staff for the Ottawa Junior Blizzard that will attend the 2010 Canada Cup:

David Toupin
Hockey is mainly part of my background, I played for 8 years. I truly believe that hockey skills can be paralleled to floorball. I have been playing floorball for 3 years now. During this time, I was named to the Ontario provincial Team for 2 years, the Blizzard won bronze at the Montreal Open 2009 and won the Big Apple Floorball Cup in New York City. As for coaching experience, I was involved in the Ottawa Floorball League for the past two years and coached the Junior Blizzard at the Canada Cup in Toronto last year.

Darren Fournier
I have been member of the Ottawa Floorball community for over 7 years and represented Ottawa in over 15 tournaments; Canada Cup Floorball Tournament 6 times, Montreal Open 5 times, New York City Big Apple Tournament once, Toronto Cup, Ottawa International Floorball Tournament and Canadain Nationals Floorball Championships twice (2007 and 2008). Most recently as a player for the Ottawa Blizzard Men’s Elite team, we won the Big Apple Floorball Cup in New York City, and took home the bronze medal in the 2009 Montreal Open. I also coached the Ottawa Jr Blizzard at last year’s Canada Cup.

Phil Paradis
Born and raised in Northern Ontario, I have been playing hockey for 17 years, reaching my highest level (AAA Midget) in 2006. I started playing floorball 3 years ago, and I believe that the sport can only be beneficial to all athletes. I have been part of the Ottawa Blizzard team that won the Big Apple Floorball Cup in New York City, and took home the bronze medal in the 2009 Montreal Open. Also, I was named to Team Ontario in 2010, who recently won the national championship. As for my coaching experience, I have coached several various sporting teams in High School, and was part of the coaching staff of last year’s Ottawa Junior Blizzard squad who competed in the Canada Cup.

Mat Sneddon
Hockey is a big part of my life; I played competitively for 15 years up to the Midget AAA level and continue to play recreationally while attending the University of Ottawa. In my opinion many hockey skills are similar to floorball and floorball provides a great off ice training opportunity for developing athletes. I have been a member of the Ottawa Blizzard for a little over a year and was part of the bronze medal team that competed at the Montreal Open. This will be my first floorball coaching experience, however for 4 years I have helped run a local hockey school and coached soccer at the high school level. In addition, I have completed my NCCP Theory 1 and 2 courses.
